can any folks out there recommend an existing theme — or good starting point to turn this into a working word-press theme?

I’m trying to update the site. We’ve installed this ‘wordpress’ thing that all the kids are on about these days and import all my umteen blogs into one location while keeping it ‘clean’ and wrestling with the many many templates out there - looking for one that actually does — a.) what it says it does, and b.) looks suitably arcanetimesy.

That two-point filter is in fact quite restrictive.
